Japanese Jiu Jitsu spurred the creation of Judo, which eventually led to the creation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the early 1900s thanks to a man named Helio Gracie. Helio was a small man and had trouble performing many of the standing techniques required in Judo, so he began refining the ground techniques. These refined ground techniques allowed smaller opponents to use positioning and leverage to allow smaller opponents to defeat larger and stronger ones. Over time techniques have been refined over and over to suit a variety of skill levels, situations, and even military and law enforcement.
Not only is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a great martial art for sport, it is also dominating the Mixed Martial Arts Arenas globally. BJJ is so effective that the US Army commissioned the Gracie family to adapt their techniques for the modern warfighter. Law enforcement agencies are seeing great results, including reduction officer and civilian injuries, with their BJJ trained officers. Recently, Gracie University released a modified curriculum aimed at teaching women to defend against sexual predators. So, if you are wondering "why Jiu Jitsu?" then rest assured, BJJ is the only sport, combat, and street tested form of martial arts, so you can't go wrong!
